In the last 7 days, the snowpack near Cooke City has doubled. This new snow placed enormous stress on weak facets on the ground. These facets formed during below zero F weather during the second week of November. Photo: GNFAC
This avalanche was triggered by the victim in very flat terrain underneath this steep slope. The avalanche broke 2-3 feet deep, 100 yards wide, and ran 400 feet vertical. Photo: GNFAC
