A skier near Cooke City got cracking and collapsing in areas where the snowpack is thin.  These signs of instability are most common on mid to low elevation slopes.  This slope likely would have avalanched if the slope angle was steeper.  Photo Clark Corey

Nearly 50 contestants participated in the 11th annual King and Queen of the Ridge held a Bridger Bowl.  It was one of the most successful King and Queen fundraising events ever.  All proceeds go towards avalanche education.  Thanks to all who hiked and suffered. Photo Mike Coil

Bridger Range, 2013-02-16

There are two basic snow structures in the Bridger Range. One is a deeper snowpack that has a several thin layers of facets in the middle of the snowpack but these are not much of a concern. The other basic structure is shown in the photo. While these areas have adjusted to the weight of new snow, making avalanches less likely, this is a poor structure which keeps avalanches possible.
