Wet Slabs on Bald Peak

Wet Slabs on Bald Peak

These wet slab avalanches occured on a southeast aspect on Bald Peak near Lionhead during recent warm weather and ran just over 1000 ft vertical.  They broke on facets near the ground that lost strength as they became wet.  Dry slabs fail when more stress is added to a weak layer.  Wet slabs fail when liquid water decreases the strength of the weak layer.
