This small pocket failed on buried surface hoar and is a good example that buried weak layers still exists in our snowpack. These near surface weak layers will become more of a problem as we get more snow over the next few days. Photo Beau Fredlund

The Bridger, Gallatin and Madison Ranges, the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone, the mountains around Cooke City and the Washburn Range:
A Gallatin Snow Ranger has spotted many small wet slides like this one in the Crazies on clear sunny days. Similar ones can be expected throughout the advisory area on south facing slopes. Though small these wet slides are heavy and can cause serious injury even if they don't bury you. Photo - B. Bolte
These wet slab avalanches occured on a southeast aspect on Bald Peak near Lionhead during recent warm weather and ran just over 1000 ft vertical. They broke on facets near the ground that lost strength as they became wet. Dry slabs fail when more stress is added to a weak layer. Wet slabs fail when liquid water decreases the strength of the weak layer.
